The subtitle of "The Underdogs" could be: The more things change, the more they stay the same. This novel of the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920) shows the tragedy of power struggles, vacuums and abuse in politics. When the simple mountain peasants of central Mexico revolt against the tyranny of the abusive & corrupt Federal government, Azuela shows how they quickly become even more tyrannical, murderous and destructive than the dictator they are opposing. "We have met the enemy and it is us" comes to mind, as does Lord Acton's famous quote: "Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely." Azuela wrote this novel in 1915, at the height of the revolution when rebel movements turned upon each other like rabid dogs -- underdogs that have gone from abused to abuser. Azuela was a physician who at first was loyal to the revolution but soon realized that his compadres were actually worse than the power they were opposing. The novel went unnoticed until it was published in 1925 by a gringo publisher in Texas. Azuela's prose is simple, but with great impact, to coincide with the simplicity of his characters. I can't help but think that Hemingway may have been influenced by his style.Product details

This is an old translation that is now outdated. The writing is stiff, awkward and almost unreadable. The more recent translation by Gustavo Pellon is much better. I bought 5 of these for high school students and the books are not usable.
Powerful story. Anticipates Hemmingway both in content and style.
I had to read this novel for a history class- it serves it's purpose to give perspective on the Mexican revolution, but isn't particularly interesting beyond that and still very, very vague. The ease of read makes it tolerable.
I recommend that this novel be read at least twice through in order to fully appreciate it.

A little hard to follow owing to lack of solid narrative thread, but a solid look at the Mexican Revolution, about which I admittedly know very little. Don't read this book if you're looking for history, but it is quite an interesting portrait of desperate men (and women) in desperate times.
